The LIGHT Institute, which stands for Leaders Inspiring Growth Harmony and Transformation, will be a three phase training program that will empower change makers, organizers, leaders, and volunteers with the ability to strengthen and protect the community against psychological warfare and help facilitate community care. The LIGHT Institute equips emerging leaders with the necessary resources to become influential community leaders and advocates for positive change.

The LIGHT Institute will be in 3 phases:

Phase 1: April 24th and 25th

Phase 2: June 12th and June 13th

Phase 3: August 14th and 15th

Graduation: August 21st

If you would like to be considered for a spot in the Institute, please submit an application. Spots are limited and the application will close March 10, 2026.

United Women of Color is taking a bus to Montgomery on Friday, Feb. 27, 2026, to visit the EJI (Equal Justice Initiative) Legacy Sites, which include The Legacy Museum, The National Memorial for Peace and Justice, and Freedom Monument Sculpture Park. Visiting EJI Legacy Sites gives us a powerful, firsthand understanding of America’s history of racial injustice, helping connect past to present and deepen our commitment to equity and justice.

UWOC is hosting this community safety event on Ella Baker’s birthday, honoring her belief that “Give light and people will find the way.”
As we revive the Citizens Coalition for Justice Reform, this program focuses on building real skills to keep Black and Brown communities safe.

The event includes:

  • A Black-led safety outlook on Huntsville

  • A hands-on de-escalation training (ages 13+)

  • Free 3-day emergency preparedness survival kits

Participants must be able to engage in light movement without physical assistance.

Join UWOC, Alabama Arise, and One For Justice as we screen the documentary “The Alabama Solution” at Shenanigans Theater October 18th! The Alabama Solution is an award-winning HBO documentary directed by Charlotte Kaufman and Andrew Jarecki. The film has been described by the LA Times as “one of the most shocking, visceral depictions of our carceral state ever put to film.” Indiewire called it “a jaw-dropping prison exposé,” while Variety noted its story “exerts a grip worthy of a thriller.” At Sundance this year, the film played to standing ovations.
