Volunteer Appreciation Week Spotlight: Alex Forsythe and the Power of Community Care

In honor of Volunteer Appreciation Week, we are proud to spotlight Alex Forsythe (they/them), a dedicated community leader behind the Little Free Pantries of Madison County. This initiative is so powerful because it is entirely volunteer-run—neighbors showing up for neighbors, making sure that anyone in need has access to food and essential items, no questions asked.

Alex’s leadership reflects the heart of what volunteerism looks like at its best: collective action, mutual aid, and community care. During Volunteer Appreciation Week, we celebrate Alex and the many volunteers who help keep these pantries stocked, maintained, and accessible. Their commitment reminds us that small acts of service can create lasting impact.

In Her Own Words …

“For the past year, I’ve volunteered with United Women of Color, building meaningful connections with people who are deeply committed to community care. Through this volunteer collaboration, the pantry network has grown and gained visibility!

I’ve spent over five years doing free pantry and outreach work. Alongside maintaining little free pantries, I table at Pride events and local raves to distribute safer sex supplies and harm reduction resources, and I create educational materials focused on reproductive justice. Outside of this work, I spend my time caring for my family, gardening, and writing poetry.”
