HOLIDAY HOLLA Kicks Off the Season with Purpose!

As part of the nationwide Movement for Black Lives Holiday Holla on Dec. 13, and in partnership with Lakeside United Methodist Church, the United Women of Color community came together for a powerful day of safety and collective care.

Dec. 13th was a meaningful day to gather, as it marks Ella Baker’s birthday. She is a guiding beacon for UWOC and was a civil rights organizer who believed in the power of grassroots leadership and in empowering people to organize and lead movements for justice.

UWOC is forever grateful to all the volunteers and community members who invested their time and energy into this day:

  • Security expert Richard Martin spoke about the importance of knowing your neighbors and not becoming an easy target.

  • Cap Quinn led a self-defense training with an emphasis on de-escalation.

  • We assembled 45 emergency preparedness buckets with the happy help of our volunteers. All participants took one home to get a great jumpstart on their home safety plan!
