“I believe that there is a real connection to volunteering.”

My name is Delores Grandy, and I am a native of Birmingham, Alabama, and a graduate of Woodlawn High School in 1976.  After spending a year at a community college, I decided to start a career. My career began 21 July 1976 upon entering the U.S. Army as a 76Y, where I became one of the first female Supply Sergeants.  After leaving the U.S. Army on 5 November 1985, I began working for the Federal service in February 1986 in Bamberg, Germany. I retired after 37 years with the Federal Government and moved to Huntsville, Alabama, with my husband in July 2014. While serving in the U.S. Army and working for the Federal Government in various locations, I obtained a Bachelor's degree in Business Management.

I have always had a “can-do” attitude, enthusiastic about life and willingness to encourage as well as motivate others. The experience in working with a myriad of individuals has afforded me the understanding and special needs of others, as well as providing motivation tempered with tact. Being an experienced soldier, wife of a soldier, college graduate, and logistics professional has contributed to the understanding of developing relationships, focusing on assisting others.  It has always been God first, family second and becoming a better person. One of my goal achievements since retirement has been obtaining real estate licenses (Florida and Alabama), becoming a notary public, running in a half marathon and now an avid cyclist, and volunteering  with various organizations.

I believe that there is a real connection to volunteering. I greatly appreciate the integrity, perseverance, devotion and the desire to give are clearly the disciplines of the military that have assisted me move in a positive direction. I have volunteered with United Women of Color for around 3 years, and I love it. Recently, I have been helping with the UCH food pantries, where my husband and I help package food, hygiene, and diaper products for over 70 families. It’s a blessing to give back and help the community!
