The Alabama Solution Screening at Fellowship Presbyterian

On June 20, United Women of Color hosted a community screening of The Alabama Solution at Fellowship Presbyterian Church. Twenty-eight community members attended the event to learn more about conditions within Alabama's prison system and the urgent need for accountability and reform.

Following the screening, participants engaged in a thoughtful and spirited discussion with Julie Sledd Godwin and Clara Brooks. Together, they reflected on the film's portrayal of Alabama's prison crisis, discussed its impact on incarcerated individuals and their families, and explored opportunities for community advocacy and systemic reform. The conversation underscored the importance of public education and civic engagement in advancing meaningful change.

The screening marked an important first step in UWOC's Prison Oversight Committee Advocacy Initiative, helping to build awareness, strengthen community connections, and encourage ongoing engagement around issues affecting incarcerated people, their loved ones, and communities across Alabama.

The initiative's next action will be a trip to Montgomery on July 29, 2026, to attend the public hearing of the Alabama Prison Oversight Committee. Participants will have the opportunity to provide public comment, sharing firsthand perspectives on the realities of incarceration and its lasting effects on individuals, families, and communities. Through this advocacy, UWOC seeks to ensure that the voices of those most impacted by Alabama's prison system are heard by state leaders responsible for oversight and reform.
