"Even small shows of solidarity can speak volumes ... " - Volunteer June Schmoeker

"I really appreciate UWOC's dedication to solidarity, coalition, and community aid. There's never a moment when [Volunteer Coordinator Amia Robinson] or [Executive Director] Angela aren't there to show up for others, even in small situations like tabling.

As the backlash against the queer community continues, it's a definite source of comfort to see UWOC show up for Pride. Even small shows of solidarity can speak volumes, and knowing UWOC is willing to show up helps inspire me to try harder for my community and others around me.

For myself, my name is June Marie Schmoeker (she/her). I've been with UWOC for maybe 4 or 5 years, mostly helping table and offering an extra pair of hands to help when I can.

Outside of UWOC, I've done some tabling and lobby work for Citizens’ Climate Lobby, as well as showing up with Alabama Trans Rights Action Coalition in Montgomery. I'm also a street medic after receiving training with Rocket City Medic Collective and Atlanta Rescue Medics. While I've enjoyed a very rare opportunity to lobby in D.C., it's left me with a greater drive to serve my own community and the people who have to live in it, and I'm excited to work towards that in the future."
