UWOC: 7 Lessons from Our First 7 Years
Executive Director Angela Curry reflects on seven years at the helm of UWOC, sharing key lessons learned.
Start small. Stay bold.
United Women of Color began with seven women committed to building a table in spaces where we weren’t always welcomed. Today, we reach nearly 3,000 people each week—and we’re still growing.
A strong board is a gift.
The best board members don’t just support—they challenge us to stay mission-driven, stay focused, and show up consistently with courage and care.
Conflict will happen. Resolution must follow.
Growth invites friction. We’ve learned that naming and navigating conflict with clarity is essential for a just and lasting movement.
Volunteers are everything.
They are not just helpers—they are the heartbeat of our work. Our progress is powered by their time, talent, and belief in the mission.
There’s power in moving together.
Collective action isn’t just strategy—it’s soul work. When we move in sync, we amplify the voices of the most marginalized.
Harmony flows from authenticity.
When people bring their full selves—without pretense—collaboration becomes easier, healthier, and more joyful.
We’re not alone—we’re still gathering.
It may feel like we’re in the minority, but we’re simply still finding each other. And each connection brings us closer to collective liberation.
