Women Have Always Carried More Than Our Share

We are the backbone of families, the keepers of community, the ones who stretch time, resources, and patience in ways that often go unseen. We give life—literally—and then spend a lifetime nurturing, protecting, organizing, and holding things together.

That kind of strength is not accidental. It is rooted in a long legacy of women—especially Black women—who have led, built, and sustained communities even when systems were not designed for them to succeed.

But let’s tell the truth:
While women have given so much, we have often been valued so little.

We had to fight for the right to vote.
Fight to open a bank account.
Fight for access to credit.
Fight for equal pay.
Fight for safety in our homes, in our workplaces, and in our communities.
Fight to love who we choose.
Fight to be heard.

And in many ways, those fights are not behind us—they are still happening right now.

At United Women of Color, we recognize that honoring women is not just about looking back—it’s about preparing for what’s ahead.

As we enter this next political season leading up to the Alabama primaries, UWOC is leaning into civic education and engagement with a focus on women in leadership. We will be highlighting leaders and legends from our past while equipping our community with the tools to engage in the present.

Because representation matters—but informed, engaged communities matter even more.

And let’s be clear—this work is not just for women.

The health of our communities depends on all of us. When women are supported, families are stronger. When women are heard, communities are more responsive. When women lead, systems have the potential to become more just.

That means we need everyone—women and men alike—to be part of this work.

So here’s how you can plug in:

This is how change happens—not all at once, but through consistent, collective action.

Women have always carried the future.

Now it’s time to ensure we are shaping it.
