Rediscovering Gatsby: A New Lens Through “The Great Mann”

United Women of Color was honored to co-host author Kyra Davis Lurie, who wrote The Great Mann.

UWOC Civic Engagement Intern Jordan Riche reflected on Lurie’s reimagining of The Great Gatsby, calling it “a must-read.”Jordan shared, “The Great Gatsby is a pillar in American literature, and it was one of my favorite books to read in high school. Lurie's spin incorporating the Black American experience made her story relatable,” adding that the depiction of old Hollywood figures who used their platforms for advocacy was “inspirational.”

United Women of Color Executive Director and Founder Angela Curry praised Lurie’s storytelling by saying, “I was immediately and totally captivated by the passages she read. The way she interweaved historical figures with the fictional characters was magical.”
