Community Gathers for UWOC’s George Floyd Commemoration Day

Let today be a reminder: we belong to each other. We are stronger together. And we will keep going until justice isn’t just a dream—but a reality we all live in.
— Angela Curry, UWOC Executive Director

On May 25, 2025, neighbors—both old friends and new faces alike—gathered for a heartfelt Community Day in honor of George Floyd. Families and friends played Bingo, bounced and slid on inflatables, created community art and bracelets, sported temporary tattoos, and tested their aim at ring toss while music filled the air. There was even a magician! Lively music set the tone while everyone enjoyed mouthwatering BBQ from Watch Me Eat. Even the rain held off, making space for laughter, reflection, and togetherness. It was a day to remember, as we celebrated and reflected as a united community. Learn WHY we hosted a Community Day Commemorating George Floyd.

FROM THE DESK OF OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR:

Good afternoon, everyone.

My name is Angela Curry. I’m a daughter, a mother, and I serve as Executive Director of United Women of Color.

Five years ago today, we watched the breath leave George Floyd’s body. That moment changed the world—but for many of us, especially Black families, it didn’t reveal anything new. It just made the truth impossible to ignore.

Today is not just about grief—it’s about growth. It’s about how we turn mourning into movement. As a mother, I want my children to live in a world where their dignity is protected, not debated. As a daughter, I carry the stories and strength of those who came before me. And as a leader, I believe deeply in the power of community to create the change we need.

So this day—this joyful, healing, family-filled day—is our response. It’s how we honor George Floyd and so many others. Not just with words, but with action. With togetherness. With love that demands justice.

Let today be a reminder: we belong to each other. We are stronger together. And we will keep going until justice isn’t just a dream—but a reality we all live in.

Thank you for being here. Thank you for believing.
