Beyond the rhetoric
Community Discussion series
An important aspect of civic engagement and social justice is being informed and up to date on the issues in our local community. UWOC hosts up to four events per year where guests are invited in to discuss topics that affect the day to day life of minority populations.
Until COVID-19, these events were held in public spaces and broadcast online to reach a broad audience. Viewership averages about 1,500 people per event.
Sample topics include:
Health disparities in African American and Latina communities,
Economic and educational opportunities for financial uplifting and reducing the wealth gap,
Importance of voting and civic engagement,
Nature of societal relationships between law enforcement and minorities.
We utilize a focus group, current events, and feedback from the community to select topics of discussion relevant to our target population and to develop discussion formats.
